Credit card debt cheaper than store card
Posted on | March 27, 2011 | No Comments
Using a credit card instead of a store card could help you avoid serious debt problems according to one expert. Martin Bamford of Informed Choice says store cards are usually more expensive and have higher penalty charges. He warns that the fine print on store cards is not always explained to shoppers. Bamford says: “You are much more likely to get a better rate of interest from your credit card, particularly if you move to a balance transfer deal in the future”. If you are already struggling to pay back debts, it is a good idea to get advice about solutions like Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs). A person with over £15000 of unsecured debts, like on store cards, can pay back a more manageable amount each month over a period of 5 years.

Question by Grant Kelso: I want to transfer my credit card balance.?
I currently have about £6000 on my credit card. The minimum payment per month is about £140 which actually only pays of about £10-15 off my actual balance, the rest on interest. Looking to transfer my balance but don’t know where to start! So I thought maybe I could get a bit of advice here to get the ball rolling? I’m in the UK, Thanks!

Answer by cyranae
I don’t know the credit system in the UK but please be careful if you decide to transfer the amount to another credit card–in the US the minimum charge for transfer is usually 3% of your total transfer in addition to a 75$ transfer charge (I know, it doesn’t make any sense). I did not pay close enough attention to the fine print and was shocked at the costs (yes, I should have known better).
Your best bet is probably to try and get a bank loan; they’re usually a little more trustworthy and can’t change the interest rates without notice, unless you have a sliding interest rate (always go for the fixed rate then there will be no surprises).

Question by Alana: Does anyone know of a credit card offer with 0% on balance transfer for 1yr and no balance transfer fee?
I know it sounds too good to be true, but I have excellent credit and I’ve been looking online and nobody offers more than 6 months. Even if its 9 months it still good. Does any of you know or has received such offer and can share it with me?
THANK YOU.
